The number of Hispanic-owned businesses grew 31 percent between 1997 and 2002 — three times the national average for all businesses — according to the newest Survey of Business Owners: Hispanic-Owned Firms: 2002, released this month by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Choice Hotels Expands Franchise Ownership Among Minorities
Worldwide lodging franchisor Choice Hotels International, Inc. (NYSE: CHH - News) announced that its Emerging Markets Division increased development deals by 260 percent from 2003-2005 among diverse franchisees, including African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans and Native Americans.

Mexican birthrate plummets
After decades of decline, the national fertility rate dropped to a milestone 2.1 children per woman last year, according to Mexico's National Population Council. That puts Mexico's rate about even with the United States (2.08), possibly affecting future rates of migration from the country.
